When You Want to Read Your Bible But Keep Falling Behind…

Great Books· Jesus

1 Dec

Have you ever wanted to read your entire Bible but felt discouraged when you couldn’t perfectly follow a reading plan? Maybe you started with gusto, then life got busy and you fell of track, so you completely abandoned the plan altogether. Me too.

But God’s Word isn’t meant to just be a schedule of boxes to check off. Our Christianity isn’t based on whether we did or did not complete a specified reading “on time.” Our quiet time with the Lord is unique, because each one of us is unique.

The number of minutes we can spend in God’s Word will ebb and flow based on the season of life we’re in.

Some days we oversleep. Some days the kids wake up early or life needs us before we get our time with the Lord. When that happens, we don’t need to berate ourselves just because we missed a day (or more). Instead, we should be able to look forward to opening our Bibles and picking up right where we left off, without the guilt of feeling “behind.”

To fulfill my own desire to track my Bible reading without feeling pressure to complete certain passages on specified dates, I created a simple record keeper and taped it inside the back of my Bible. When friends and relatives loved the simple concept so much they started asking for copies of their own, I knew I wasn’t the only one who craves peace about reading God’s Word.

So I made this FREE Bible-reading record keeper available to you too.

Here’s how it works:

  • Print the record keeper and tape it on the inside cover of your favorite Bible.
  • Fold or trim the paper so the edges don’t stick out.
  • Fill in the date when you begin reading a book of the Bible.
  • Write the new date when you complete that book.

That’s it! By doing those simple things, you’re able to keep track of what you’ve read so you don’t have to guess or remember. And there are no deadlines. Whether you complete the entire Bible in 6 months or 4 years, you’re always moving forward, never behind.

This year I actually made it my goal to read the entire Bible. We nearing the end of 2016 and it has been so, so wonderful for me! I found a 52 -week reading planning that didn’t keep me in the same book of the Bible until I was done it. Instead, it had me in a different book each day of the week. I’m not sure what I will do in 2017, but I think I am going to pin this in case it might work for me next year.
