The book of Proverbs is a wealth of wisdom, helping us to distinguish between good and evil and stressing the importance of wisdom and obedience to God. It’s a daily reminder to guard our hearts.

Praying Through Proverbs: 31 Days of Marriage-Strengthening Prayers by Davonne Parks is designed to give you a jump-start to a deeper prayer life and stronger marriage. Every day includes a different marriage prayer based on the 31 chapters of Proverbs.

You are encouraged to pray with your spouse if possible, but if your spouse is unwilling or unable, you are still invited. These chapters were written in a way that you can pray together or alone as you allow God’s Word to penetrate your heart.

Sample Prayer

Proverbs 10 – Encouraging Speech

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for our tongues that can be used to communicate love and respect to each other. Yet we know our tongues can be swords that bring shame instead of honor if we’re not careful with our speech (Prov. 12:18).

Please help us to speak in a way that edifies and uplifts each other instead of tearing each other down. Guide us so we can see when our words might be damaging instead of life giving.

When we are in the midst of differing viewpoints, please give us a desire to listen and to think of the other person’s perspective before we offer our own opinion (James 1:19-20). Show us how we can be each other’s biggest encourager and supporter as we walk through life together, and help us continually communicate our love and appreciation for each other in a way that glorifies You.

In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

 “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is worth little. The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of wisdom.” – Proverbs 10:19-21
