Messy Toy Room Solutions
Today’s messy situation is about a toy-room that’s shared by kids of multiple ages!
*Name has been changed to protect the messy.
“We have 4 boys ranging in age from 1 to 7. I want to use this room for my little one, too. I also want to allow the older ones to use for homework and reading. But, I can’t get it organized enough to keep choking hazards from the older boys stuff away. He also gets into their books and crayons so I keep them in the grey bins. I really want a more attractive, organized look since it is on the main floor. But, I don’t want it to be a danger to my little one. Is that possible? The older 2 are in school during the day.” – Rhonda*
Rhonda, it looks like you have a great handle on the clutter – I don’t see too many toys so you’re already off to a really fantastic start! I think you need some sort of bookshelf in the room. You could keep the books on a higher shelf so your youngest child can’t get into them. Crayons and other art supplies (or even Lego’s!) could go in a basket on a high shelf to keep them out of reach in an attractive manner.
You can go here to see how I decluttered and reorganized my entire home using only items that I already had on-hand. I keep our art supplies in baskets on bookshelves, so that article will give you some good visuals for what I’m picturing. If you don’t have any bookshelves in your house that can be moved to your toy room, check Craigslist or visit a few local consignment stores to find a solid shelf for a good price.
As far as making the room more attractive, definitely take a few minutes to read Jennifer’s article about organizing a toy room for kids of multiple ages – she had some FABULOUS ideas and lots of photos to show what she meant!
I hope this helps you, Rhonda! Your room doesn’t look bad at all – I think you could have a completely transformed space within just a few hours! Please let me know if you have any more questions about this room and please send after photos when you’re finished!!
