8 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Decision
You know how sometimes you have a decision looming, and you almost feel paralyzed because you don’t know which direction to choose?
I feel like that on a regular basis! Especially if the decision is something I think might affect or upset other people. Whether your decision is big or small, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- Is either choice fine?
Especially for small decisions, if either choice would be okay (like a brand of bottled water or where you’re going to eat dinner), just pick one quickly and move on! Don’t let these tiny decisions that have no real importance on the rest of your life weigh you down!
- Is there room for this in the budget? If not, how can I make it work?
Just tonight, I went through my bank statement with a fine-tooth comb and unsubscribed from several monthly services my husband and I really don’t need. I’m also going through a scholarship course and applying for many scholarships in hopes of getting a completely FREE education. If there’s something you really want but can’t afford, chances are, you can work towards making it happen without throwing the budget out the window. - Is this honoring to God?
If the answer is no, do not move in that direction! - Who will this affect, and how will it affect them?
If you’re making a larger decision that will affect other people, do consider those people, but also make sure you’re being realistic and not blowing possible effects out of proportion in your imagination!
- How can I minimize any negative effects?
For example, I plan to start taking online courses later this month to finish my bachelor’s degree. I recognize this will likely affect my family, especially my children, a great deal. To help minimize that, I am only signing up for 1 class at a time, plus I have minimized several of my other commitments to make space in my schedule. - What do I want?
Our tendency is often to consider others – which is a good thing! – but when we do that to an extreme so we’re losing the very person God created us to be, we’re missing the point. God does not call us to get so wrapped up in everyone else that we completely lose ourselves – He calls us to honor Him. Using the very skills and talents He has given us is one way to do that. - Should I wait?
I’ve thought about going back to school for eleven years – ever since I dropped out! But when my children were young, and my husband and I were building our local business, it wasn’t the time. Now that much of my job has been given to other team members or outsourced, and my kids are old enough to help with chores and do much of their schoolwork on their own, the timing is better. Even though I’m nervous about starting again, I don’t regret that I waited! Which brings me to my final point… - Am I letting fear have the final say?
Sometimes, we are afraid of the unknown. So we stay put, when really, we’re missing out on the blessings that could happen – and the doors that could open – when we prayerfully step out in faith. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” So, when you’re afraid, remember the devil himself is putting that fear in you. Refuse to let fear have the final say!
Special Deal This Week (a great way to practice making decisions!):
In case you’re wondering about the scholarship course I mentioned above – it’s 50% off until NOON EST on Thursday, August 8th, 2019. If you’re interested in saving tuition costs for yourself or your children, go buy it this second!! You’ll earn back more than the cost of the entire course with the first scholarship you receive! (I am an affiliate but I paid my own cash money to buy this course and I’m so glad I did!)
The rest of Build Your Bundle is also having a flash sale until NOON Thursday (8/8/19)! In case you missed the details in May, this is technically a homeschool bundle full of great homeschool products for amazing prices, but there are so many homemaking resources, activities for learning on days off, character building and Bible study guides, that it has some fantastic offerings for you even if you don’t homeschool.
I personally can hardly wait to start the United States geography course with my upcoming 5th grader – we played around in the course over summer break and had a blast with just the little bit we’ve seen so far! (We’re also geeking out over the night sky nature study printable in the Charlotte Mason bundle!)
Plus, three of my products are in this flash sale so if you’ve been wanting to buy any of them, now’s a great time to snag one for an awesome deal! They are the:
- Simplify Your Homeschool Routine video masterclass in the Home & Homeschool Bundle
- 28 Days to Timeliness eBook in the Planner Bundle
- A secret product in the Mystery Bundle (shh, don’t tell, but if you haven’t read Chaos to Clutter-Free, you’ll definitely want to check out the mystery bundle!
My absolute favorite part about Build Your Bundle is that if you don’t want all the resources from the premade categories, you can make your own custom bundle for a really great price (this is what I did – I bought $100 worth of stuff for just $25)!
And one more thing? With this bundle, as well as the rest of your life, please don’t put so much pressure on yourself to make a perfect decision – sometimes we make the right choice, and sometimes we don’t. But if we are seeking to honor God and to love our families well, we need to trust that everything will turn out okay in the end, whether or not we made a perfect decision every time.
It’s okay to make mistakes and to learn from them.
